Teeth whitening with "ZOOM"

In dentistry the role of aesthetics is growing. Many patients are not pleased with the natural colour of their teeth. In the last two decades teeth whitening has become one of the most popular esthetical procedures in dentistry (American Dental Association, 2010). Whitening of vital teeth (if done right) is one of the safest and most effective esthetical procedures (Kihn, 2007; ADA, 2010).

Factors that affect teeth colour

  • Heredity
  • Age (changes in the mineral structure of teeth – enamel descends and becomes thinner, dentine – thicker and yellower)
  • Pigments of food and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, Coca Cola)
  • Bad habits – smoking, chewing tobacco
  • Overall illness and therapy of them (for example, irradiation of malignant tumours or chemotherapy)
  • Antibiotics and other medicine (tetracycline, antihistamines, antidepressants, preparations with iron)
  • Bad/insufficient oral hygiene
  • Devital teeth (trauma, extirpation of pulp, bleeding of pulp, hemosiderin and other pigments)

Philips ZOOM – newest generation of gentle and effective professional teeth whitening system

Patients’ most demanded professional teeth whitening system. It reaches the maximum effect and durability with comparatively small concentration of whitening substances. In 60 minutes it makes teeth lighter for up to 8 tones.

Preconditions for teeth whitening

  • Healthy teeth and gums (obligatory examination of a dentist, visiting dental hygienist, rtg examination)
  • No plaque or tartar – a professional oral hygiene procedure must be done – taking off the outer pigment and exposing the natural colour of teeth.
  • Artificial teeth restoration - fillings, veneers, crowns, teeth bridges – are not subject to whitening (it is an option to change the fillings after whitening and match the new colour)
  • Devital teeth can change colour from inside – an inner whitening is needed (endodontic treatment + the whitening gel has to be put in the tooth)
  • Before whitening a consultation is needed to hear the patient’s desires and reality. Sometimes the patients’ goal is snow white teeth that can be reached only with veneers or crowns. All indications and contraindications of teeth whitening should be talked over.

Contraindications for teeth whitening

  • Carious teeth, old restorations with edge leak, deep cracks
  • Bad oral hygiene,  plaque, tartar
  • Periodontal disease
  • High teeth sensitivity, teeth wear, erosion
  • Pregnancy or the period of breast-feeding
  • Serious overall sicknesses (immunosuppression, AIDS, uncompensated diabetes etc.)
  • Age <18 years (European Union directive).

Influence on teeth structure

  • Doesn’t create damage to enamel or teeth demineralisation, because the whitening gel has neutral pH, teeth aren’t subject to temperature changes the structure of teeth isn’t changed. Calcium ions help to strengthen teeth!

Influence on pulp tissue

  • Can create only temporary teeth sensitivity, pulp tissue isn’t damaged and vitality isn’t endangered.

Influence on mucous membranes

  • In the time of professional whitening an adequate isolation of soft tissue is ensured, so there practically aren’t any risks of burns.

Dentist/teeth hygienist part

  • Since whitening with ZOOM is conducted in the cabinet of a dentist/teeth hygienist, the patient can be sure that the procedure is safe and appropriate to he’s oral conditions.
